Description: Nellie R. Stevens Holly (Ilex x ‘Nellie R. Stevens’) is a large evergreen holly with dark green leaves and abundant red berries. Excellent for screening and barriers.
History & Origin: Created in 1900 at the U.S. National Arboretum, this holly hybrid resulted from a chance crossing between Chinese Holly (Ilex cornuta) and English Holly (Ilex aquifolium). It was named after Nellie Robinson Stevens, who harvested the berries from her garden at Oxford, Maryland, that produced this remarkable hybrid. The plant gained popularity in the mid-20th century for its vigorous growth and abundant berry production.
